Operational disruption is nothing new in aviation. What has changed in 2026 is the speed at which different pressures can emerge, overlap and spread across the wider network.

Geopolitical instability can close airspace with little warning. Fuel prices can shift rapidly. Aircraft and engine supply constraints continue to affect fleet availability, while shortages of experienced personnel place additional pressure on maintenance, ground operations and technical teams. At the same time, extreme weather is becoming a more frequent operational consideration.

For airlines, MROs, operators and aviation service providers, operational resilience can no longer be treated as a standalone contingency plan. It must be built into everyday decisions about people, suppliers, maintenance, risk management and disruption response.

The central lesson from 2026 is clear: resilient aviation organisations are not those that expect disruption to disappear. They are those that can identify change early, make informed decisions and access the right support quickly.


Geopolitical Disruption Can Reshape Operations Almost Immediately

The impact of geopolitical events on aviation has been particularly visible during 2026.

Following airspace closures and disruption across the Middle East early in the year, EUROCONTROL reported 59% fewer flights between Europe and the region, with approximately 1,150 flights affected by rerouting each day. Those diversions added an estimated 206,000 kilometres of flying and 602 tonnes of additional fuel consumption daily.

By the week of 29 June to 5 July, flights between Europe and the Middle East had recovered to slightly above their 2025 level. The speed of that reversal illustrates the challenge facing operational teams: conditions can deteriorate quickly, but they can also change again before longer-term plans have been adjusted.

Airspace restrictions do not only affect operators serving the region directly. Rerouted traffic can increase congestion elsewhere, extend flight times, change fuel requirements, disrupt crew schedules and place additional pressure on maintenance planning.

Resilience therefore depends on maintaining access to current information and having decision-making processes that can adapt as conditions change. Static route assessments and annual risk reviews are increasingly insufficient in an environment where operational exposure may shift within hours.


Fuel Volatility Leaves Less Room for Operational Inefficiency

Fuel remains one of the aviation industry’s largest and most unpredictable costs.

IATA’s June 2026 outlook estimated that average jet fuel prices would be almost 70% higher than in 2025. It forecast global airline net margins falling from 4.2% to 2%, leaving considerably less financial headroom to absorb further delays, technical problems or operational inefficiencies.

EUROCONTROL data also demonstrated how quickly conditions can change. European jet fuel prices fell substantially between their early-April peak and the beginning of July, but remained volatile as the market responded to geopolitical developments and changing supply conditions.

For operators, resilience is not simply about predicting whether prices will rise or fall. It is about limiting unnecessary exposure when they do.

Longer routings, ageing aircraft, maintenance delays, repeated positioning flights and extended aircraft downtime can all increase costs. Reliable maintenance planning, accurate operational data and the ability to resolve technical issues quickly become even more important when margins are already under pressure.


Supply-Chain Constraints Are Becoming Operational Constraints

Aircraft delivery delays, engine durability issues, material shortages and limited maintenance capacity continue to affect the availability of aircraft across the industry.

In June 2026, IATA reported that the aircraft order backlog had exceeded 18,000, while the average fleet age had reached a record 15.2 years. It also estimated that airlines were operating without more than 5,000 fuel-efficient replacement aircraft they had expected to receive, contributing to higher leasing, fuel and maintenance costs, with supply-chain failures alone estimated to have cost airlines at least $11 billion during 2025.

The impact of these constraints is felt across the entire operation, influencing everything from fleet planning to day-to-day maintenance activity.

Older aircraft typically require more frequent maintenance, while parts shortages can extend turnaround times and limited engine availability can complicate maintenance programmes. At the same time, delayed deliveries often force operators to retain aircraft for longer than originally planned, adding further pressure to already stretched resources.

As a result, technical oversight and forward planning are becoming increasingly important. Operators need clear visibility of maintenance inputs, records, materials, inspection findings and emerging delays, alongside the ability to bring in additional technical expertise when internal teams or existing providers reach capacity.

A resilient maintenance strategy therefore goes beyond relying on a single plan, instead incorporating realistic alternatives for sourcing approved parts, accessing specialist expertise, securing technical representation and obtaining urgent engineering support when required.


Skills Shortages Make Workforce Flexibility Essential

Aircraft, systems and operational plans are only effective when organisations have experienced people available to deliver them.

IATA cited industry forecasts suggesting that aviation will require close to 1.5 million new professionals over the next decade, including approximately 416,000 aircraft maintenance technicians. It also identified workforce agility, training and workplace flexibility as important parts of attracting and retaining aviation talent.

For many organisations, the workforce challenge is not limited to filling permanent vacancies. Demand often rises around specific maintenance inputs, fleet changes, seasonal schedules, new stations, aircraft transitions or unexpected technical events.

Recruiting only after a requirement becomes urgent can leave operators competing for the same limited pool of qualified engineers, technicians and technical specialists.

More resilient workforce planning combines long-term talent development with access to flexible external resource. During the week of 29 June to 5 July 2026, weather accounted for 51% of all en-route air traffic flow management delays recorded across the European network.

EASA has highlighted that increasing exposure to severe weather can affect flight operations, aircraft performance, personnel workload, air traffic management equipment and airport safety services. Hazards may include heatwaves, storms, flooding, hail, lightning and windshear, sometimes occurring in locations or at times of year where they have historically been less common.

The most resilient organisations recognise that weather response extends beyond flight planning.

High temperatures can affect aircraft and ground equipment performance while increasing fatigue and heat-related risks for personnel. Storms can disrupt ramp activity, maintenance access and aircraft movements. Flooding or strong winds may reduce airport capacity and place greater pressure on already constrained schedules.

Weather cannot be controlled, but the operational response can be prepared. Clear thresholds, trained personnel, reliable forecasting, realistic schedules and defined escalation procedures can prevent a difficult situation from becoming a wider operational failure.
