Course Description

Cold weather presents some of the most challenging and demanding conditions in aviation. From snow-covered runways and low-visibility approaches to aircraft icing and frigid pre-flight checks, operating in cold environments requires heightened awareness, rigorous preparation, and precise execution.

This online course is designed to equip aviation professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively manage aircraft operations in cold climates. Whether you're a pilot, dispatcher, maintenance technician, or ground crew member, this course will provide a comprehensive understanding of how cold temperatures affect aircraft performance, operational procedures, and safety protocols.

Who Should Take This Course?
  • Ground Handling Personnel – Staff involved in aircraft handling, ramp operations, and cargo loading
  • Airport Operations Staff – Personnel responsible for managing and coordinating activities that may be affected by adverse weather
  • Aircraft Maintenance Engineers – Engineers working in areas during aircraft servicing susceptible to adverse weather incidents
  • Safety and Compliance Managers – Professionals responsible for maintaining safety standards and compliance
  • Flight Crew and Cabin Crew – Personnel who need awareness of safety during operations in adverse weather

By completing this course, participants will gain an understanding of:

Meteorology in Cold Environment - Understanding winter weather patterns, icing conditions, and the impact of low temperatures on visibility and aircraft performance.
Aircraft Ground Operations in Cold Weather – Procedures for cold-soak starts, de-icing/anti-icing techniques, pre-flight inspections, and fuel considerations in freezing conditions.
In-Flight Operations and Icing - Recognition and response to in-flight icing, system operations (pitot heat, anti-ice systems), and flight planning for cold-weather routes.
Runway and Taxiway Conditions – Assessing and adapting to slippery or contaminated surfaces, braking action reports, and low-temperature effects on airport infrastructure.
Understand emergency procedures – How to respond effectively to incidents, accidents, or hazards in the event of adverse weather.
Regulatory Guidance and Best Practices – Review of ICAO, FAA, EASA, and other relevant regulations and recommended procedures for cold weather operations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify cold-weather hazards, apply effective mitigation strategies, and operate safely and confidently in adverse winter conditions. This training is vital for reducing risk, maintaining regulatory compliance, and enhancing the overall safety of cold weather flight operations.
